One of the first units we looked at was poetry and song. This unit explored the importance and value that a writer places on every aspect of verse. This may involve the spacing he/she uses when laying out the song or the couplet at the end of the entire piece. Where there is rhyme, there is reason. From this unit, I learned that a poet pours their heart and soul into the text in hopes that their audience will feel as captivated as they did when writing. I learned that there is so much more to song than just a nice melody and how influential and deeps the words can be. We studied Joni Mitchell, who I believe to be an incredibly talented poet. She uses metaphors to convey her strong opinion and outlook on the world. It is up to us, to find that meaning within every line of the song and allow it to influence us by creating sympathy, hate and love.
Below is one of my favourite songs by Joni Mitchell. I have attached the lyrics as well as a video of her actually singing. As I learned this year it is one thing to read a poem, and another thing to hear it being read in its original composition.

The Circle Game
Joni Mitchell Yesterday a child came out to wonder Caught a dragonfly inside a jar Fearful when the sky was full of thunder And tearful at the falling of a star Then the child moved ten times round the seasons Skated over ten clear frozen streams Words like when you're older must appease him And promises of someday make his dreams And the seasons they go round and round And the painted ponies go up and down We're captive on the carousel of time We can't return we can only look Behind from where we came And go round and round and round In the circle game * Sixteen springs and sixteen summers gone now Cartwheels turn to car wheels thru the town And they tell him take your time it won't be long now Till you drag your feet to slow the circles down And the seasons they go round and round And the painted ponies go up and down We're captive on the carousel of time We can't return we can only look Behind from where we came And go round and round and round In the circle game So the years spin by and now the boy is twenty Though his dreams have lost some grandeur coming true There'll be new dreams maybe better dreams and plenty Before the last revolving year is through And the seasons they go round and round And the painted ponies go up and down We're captive on the carousel of time We can't return we can only look Behind from where we came And go round and round and round In the circle game |
