To be frank, I strongly dislike essays. But as Mr. Reid says, “jump through the flaming hoop.” (Well, I added the flaming part.) Essays are scary when you look at them as a whole. But this year, I have learned that the only way to tackle this hoop is to separate the fire from the ring. Break down the parts of an essay; start off with three ideas that support your thesis and from there build with examples, quotations and facts. The essay then transforms from a mountain to a molehill. I also learned that one of the best ways to get a good thesis is to do the thesis last. This enables your thesis to become stronger because as you work on the body paragraphs you gain more understanding of the text. I used this technique for the final IRP exam and I believe it really helped me to have a solid essay.
